Soil Carbon Coalition
Baseline Carbon Monitoring and HLM Pilots
This nonprofit organization is working to advance the practice of turning atmospheric carbon into water-holding, fertility-enhancing soil organic matter and humus. Founded by Peter Donovan, the Soil Carbon Coalition runs the Soil Carbon Challenge, a "contest" that monitors increases in soil carbon over time. Donovan has been touring the continental U.S. in a converted school bus since 2011 taking baseline measurements and then returning at years 3, 6 and 10 to re-measure and record changes. The Soil Carbon Coalition helps grow local capacity and shares data on landscape function, so that land managers can take informed responsibility for soil health and the function of their watersheds.
Soil Centric's Pro Tip
The Soil Carbon Coalition runs several programs including "Rancher to Rancher." R2R can help you set up a small, no-risk, learning site trial on your land, (a few acres or less), where you could concentrate livestock for a few hours or a day, and give it a substantial recovery period from grazing. R2R support could be helpful in planning the trial to work with your needs, including simple monitoring of the soil surface, and an optional soil carbon baseline plot.
