Located in the central Mexican state of Querétaro, the 400,000 hectare Sierra Gorda UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is a biodiversity jewel. The Reserve's five different ecosystems including arid scrubland and cloud forest provide habitat for an array of species that have been lost elsewhere. Unlike a park, the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve remains 97% privately owned, mostly by its indigenous, rural inhabitants. Pati Ruiz Corzo who has spent much of her life working to conserve this region has helped create 73 micro enterprises as an alternative to logging. There are many avenues to explore including eco-lodges, artisan workshops and authentic food experiences.
