Growing a New Economy

Winona’s Hemp & Heritage Farm, located near the White Earth Reservation in Northern Minnesota, is working with the Anishinaabe Agricultural Institute to build a new locally grown economy based on food, energy, and fiber through a new hemp production facility on LaDuke's independent land adjacent to nearby tribal areas. "Hemp is something that biodegrades back into the earth" explains LaDuke. "For me hemp is part of a return to a thoughtful and mindful way to clothe yourself."

Soil Centric's Pro Tip

Changes in Federal policy allow legal hemp cultivation in the United States creates openings for Native America Tribes to grow local economies. Growing hemp regionally provides an opportunity to move away from the extractive practices and paradigms of industrial agriculture. Winona's Hemp can provide a model for others interested in finding alternatives to a petroleum-based economy. As she says "My interest is in an economy that is restorative and regenerative."
