The Edible Schoolyard Project

Edible Education Programs

Founded by Alice Waters who is calling for "school supported regenerative agriculture," the Edible Schoolyard Project is building and sharing a national edible education curriculum. While each program in the network is different, every program is grounded in these principles: Food is the perfect teacher (every discipline comes to life in the garden or kitchen classroom). Children learn with their senses. Children learn by doing. Children thrive in nature. Good food is a right, not a privilege. The cafeteria is the heart of the school. Schools and farms support each other. Beauty is a language of care.

Soil Centric's Pro Tip

Every year the Edible Schoolyard offers a summer training.100 educators and advocates from all over the world are selected to come to the original Edible Schoolyard in Berkeley, California for four days to learn how to create edible education program in their schools and communities. Application deadlines are usually in early April and scholarships are available. The website has a map listing all participating programs and we recommend visiting a program near you to see how the next generation of eaters will learn about compost, pollinators and natural cycles. Additionally, the University of California, Berkeley offers "Edible Education 101," a free public course that typically runs from January-May. Classes are live-streamed and recordings of previous lectures are available.
